Day 128: Zuckerberg, Jobs, Gates and Peter Thiel

Yesterday I was talking about how according to Theodore Roosevelt “Comparison is the thief of joy”… and I totally agree.

Not to mention your ‘comparison instincts’ convince you to buy the new car for $60,000… actually costs you $80,000 (hullo… interest) … that you could have bought only slightly used for $38,000 but you got sucked in by ‘the new car smell’…

If you invested that same money (investing is not going ‘all in’ on the red-hot stock tip from the guy at the bar) it could have grown to a couple hundred grand for your retirement.

I digress.

Imagine, as a business coach, if you were able to identify a company that could generate BILLIONS for you and your family.

Companies generally think of innovation as an improved version of Facebook / Microsoft / CRM or to fine-tune and optimize existing lines of business.

To Make Something Better.

That’s not innovation… that’s ‘globalization’ which is basically going from one to many.

Good but far from GREAT.

True innovation means going from Zero to One.

Create new, different and possibly strange things that have never been done before.

Technology usually facilitates innovation and the underlying theme of finding different ways to do more with less.

If you want your coaching clients to excel and pay you insane amounts plus contingencies (I’ve been paid hundreds of thousands of dollars from individual coaching clients MANY times – yes you read that correctly) …. don’t carbon copy and improve something that already exists.

They need to come up with something that hasn’t been done before and create a new and different path.

In The Words Of Peter Thiel:

“The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. And the next Mark Zuckerberg won’t create a social network. If you’re copying these guys, you aren’t learning from them.”

Doing what we already know takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something similar.

But every time we create something new, we go from 0 to 1. Unless they invest in the difficult task of creating new things, companies will fail in the future no matter how big their profits remain today.”

Intelligent people come up with great statements.

Geniuses come up with great questions.
