Why Smart Business Coaches Clone Proven Models (Instead of Relying on Trial and Error)

When it comes to building a successful coaching practice, too many coaches make the same costly mistake: they try to reinvent the wheel. They spend months testing unproven marketing campaigns, writing original sales scripts, and building programs from scratch—only to end up frustrated, overworked, and underpaid.

Karl Bryan explains in episode 313 of Business Coaching Secrets that trial and error is “one of the worst strategies ever in business.” Instead, the most successful coaches embrace cloning: modeling what already works in the market and adapting it to their own business.

Why Cloning Works

Think of cloning as a fast track. Market leaders have already invested years of resources discovering what works—and what doesn’t. By studying their offers, funnels, pricing structures, and delivery models, you can shortcut the learning curve.

For example:

  • Landscaping Business – Instead of experimenting with a dozen advertising methods, a landscaper can model the direct mail pieces, bundled offers, and referral systems of top competitors who dominate their zip code.

  • Business Coaches – Rather than testing random lead magnets, a coach can adopt proven frameworks like the Conversion Equation (Interrupt, Engage, Educate, Offer) and adapt it to their niche.

Action Steps to Apply Cloning in Your Coaching Business

  1. Identify the Leaders – Look for businesses in your industry (or parallel industries) that consistently generate results. These could be award-winners, heavy advertisers, or those with high visibility in chambers of commerce.

  2. Reverse Engineer Their Process – Break down their offers, pricing, and delivery. What hooks are they using? How do they structure client onboarding?

  3. Adapt, Don’t Copy – Cloning doesn’t mean stealing. It means taking the framework that works and reshaping it for your unique brand, values, and clients.

  4. Leverage AI to Accelerate – Use tools like ChatGPT or Focused.com’s AI Coach Assist to analyze competitor strategies, create marketing variations, and test messaging faster.

  5. Refine with Feedback Loops – Once you implement, track results closely. What’s resonating? What needs tweaking? Feedback loops allow you to continuously improve without starting from scratch.

The Payoff of Cloning Over Trial and Error

Cloning shifts you from gambling on untested ideas to investing in proven systems. Instead of wasting months, you can start signing high-value clients faster, scale your revenue, and free up time to focus on delivering transformational results.

As Karl put it: “Cloning is not stealing, it’s smart business.”

If you want to thrive as a business coach—and teach your clients to do the same—focus on building peace through systems, clarity, and confidence. It will outlast every win, loss, and market shift you’ll ever face.
