Profit, Profit, Profit: The Only Law Business Coaches Need to Know

Why Profit is The Law of Business Coaching

Let’s get one thing straight: building a thriving coaching business isn’t about showing off your revenue. It’s about profit pure and simple. If I had to boil it down to three laws, they’d be profit, profit, and, you guessed it, profit. Forget the vanity metrics for a minute, profit is the domino that topples every other goal in business, for your clients and for you.

Most coaches (and business owners, let’s be honest) are obsessed with growing the top line. “If only we had more revenue, all would be well!” they say. But is it? I see coaches falling into the same trap every single week: exhausting themselves on client “growth hacks” that don’t move the needle where it matters.

Do you want staying power in this game? You want to charge what you’re worth and have clients stick around for years, not weeks? Then you master profit. Not someday, right now.

Profit is Not a Dirty Word

Let’s kill the stigma: “Profit” isn’t about being ruthless, greedy, or outsmarting your clients. It’s about building something sustainable, meaningful, and, as I put it, semi-retired-for-life. When you prioritize profit, you empower yourself to run a business (and coach other businesses) with clarity, control, and far less stress.

Reading “The Psychology of Money” by Morgan Housel or even “The Art of Spending” will open your eyes: the most profitable thing you can do is stop trying to impress, start trying to improve. This applies as much to you as a coach as it does to your clients.

Why Most Businesses Are Dead in The Water

Here’s a stat you should tattoo on your brain: Over 80% of businesses in North America run on 10% net margins or less. That means all it takes is a tiny profit leak to send the entire operation spiraling.

What’s worse, most owners (and way too many coaches) only think about revenue. They never learn to see the landscape through the lens of profit. You want to be indispensable to your clients? Show them, in 30, 60, or 90 days, how a subtle tweak cutting expenses by even 10%, or upping prices by 5%, doubles their profits. Not in theory, but in their actual bank account.

The Percentage Advantage

Let’s have a little mental workout.

Say a client has 15% net margins. Help them decrease expenses by 10% and bam! their profits shoot up by 57%. Raise prices by just 5%? You double the profit. But here’s the kicker: people are used to thinking in dollar amounts or increments. Train your mind, and your clients’ minds, to see gains in percentages, not just raw amounts. When you think “2 to 3% conversion” means 1% improvement, you miss the story; it’s actually a 50% bump.

Numbers are your ally, not the enemy. They’re the fastest way to grow your value as a coach and to silence every objection around your fees.

Chasing Revenue at the Cost of Profit

The endless parade of “get rich quick,” “side hustle for passive income,” or “build multiple streams” content out there is killing coaching businesses. Most of it is noise or flat-out untrue for 99% of people; influencers hinting that their magic Google Sheet runs twenty companies from the beach are selling a fantasy.

Want to see burnout, client churn, and disappointment? Keep chasing shiny objects. Want to see stability and growth? Get obsessed with one thing: installing a profit-first focus in every business you touch.

How to Be a Profit-First Coach

  • Reframe Your Conversations: Stop letting clients obsess about revenue. Guide every initial consult, every review, every goal-setting session to the bottom line.
  • Become Dangerous With The Numbers: You don’t have to become an accountant but know the handful of percentage levers that, when shifted, create outsized profit returns. Speak their language.
  • Stand Out at Networking Events: Don’t talk “sales and marketing” like everyone else; use clear, relatable profit stories and examples. People notice.
  • Get Results Fast: Pick one area: expenses, pricing, conversion rates. Move the needle in 30 days. Show the annualized impact. When the client realizes your fee is now “free” because of profit gains, they never leave.
  • Train Your Mind to Think in Percentages: Practice translating small changes into big percentage jumps, everywhere, so you see what others miss.

Problems to Watch For

  • Clients Distracted By “Growth”: Nip it in the bud. Show how growth without profit improvement just means more stress.
  • You Getting Distracted: Don’t let shiny objects (AI, “hacks,” or influencer advice) pull you from your lane. Master profit, then innovate.

Building a coaching business is as complex as you make it or as simple as you allow. Focus on profit, help clients do the same, and you’ll both be semi-retired in far less time than the industry tells you.
