Incentives: The Secret Weapon for Business Coaches

The Power of Incentives in Business Coaching

Let’s get right to the meat and potatoes. If you want to become a local legend, the kind of business coach who draws a crowd at every event and has clients lined up seeking your advice, you must master the art of incentives.

This isn’t just theory. Charlie Munger (Warren Buffett’s business partner and arguably smarter than any room he walks into) said, “Show me the incentives, and I’ll show you the outcome.” If you’re ignoring incentives in your coaching practice, you’re leaving mountains of opportunity and money on the table.

Why Incentives Work: The Psychology

Every human is wired the same way: pain vs. pleasure, comfort vs. discomfort. If you want a small business owner to take action, grow profits, or follow your advice, you’d better give them a compelling reason. Most coaches harp about “money” as the great motivator, but the reality? It’s dead last. Rank, recognition, and prizes are what move the needle.

Four Core Incentives You Can Deploy:

  • Rank: Titles, levels, status, think “Manager of the Month,” or “President’s Circle.”
  • Recognition: Public shout-outs, social media mentions, or an award plaque in their office.
  • Prizes: Competitions with tangible rewards. Maybe a weekend getaway for the top performer or a high-end dinner.
  • Money: Bonuses, profit sharing, or stock options, but only after they’re above the poverty line.

Real-World Example: Events & Referrals

Let’s get into the weeds of how this works. In the podcast, I talked about filling local live events, the lifeblood for any coach looking to become a local legend. The hardest part? Getting butts in seats at event number two, event number three, and so on.

If you align incentives with attending your event (say, public recognition for those who bring a guest, or an exclusive mastermind group for top referrers), all of a sudden, filling the room becomes easier. I’d aim for two referrals per attendee. The snowball effect kicks in: one event turns into two, two into four, and before you know it, you’re the Tony Robbins of your town.

But the real juice? The next event practically fills itself, and those people come pre-sold, excited, and ready to work with you.

Addressing the Obvious: The Challenges

Let’s not live in fantasy land; setting incentives isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

  • Overcomplicating Incentives: Coaches sabotage themselves by offering convoluted, hard-to-understand incentive programs. Keep it simple. “Attend my workshop, bring two business owners, and get entered to win XYZ.” Done.
  • Short-Term Thinking: Don’t promise massive rewards too early. Xerox learned that when salespeople aim for 10 calls (not 100), they hit their target early, build momentum, and then push for more.
  • Misaligned Incentives: The horror story: FedEx paid ground crews by the hour, guess what happened? The crews took longer. When they switched to per-plane bonuses, flights went out on time, and everyone made more money. Misaligned incentives can crush your results.

Action Steps: Implement Incentives Today

  • Audit Existing Incentives: What’s already motivating your clients? Is it cash, status, or recognition? Ask them, don’t assume.
  • Set Clear Targets: Make the goal so simple it’s almost impossible not to hit: “Host 3 events in 3 weeks for 3 new clients.” Momentum is everything.
  • Publicize Recognition: Make achievement visible. Social media posts, business associations, event shout-outs.
  • Layer Rewards: Start with recognition, toss in a meaningful prize, and use money as the cherry on top.
  • Measure & Iterate: Watch what works and why. Don’t be afraid to adjust; business is a living, breathing thing.

Why This Matters

Look, if you want a thriving, wildly profitable coaching practice, where clients pay, stay, and refer, this is how you build it. Incentives aren’t a tactic. They’re an operating system for growth.

I created an operating system you can install in any small business to increase profits. If you’re ready to upgrade your practice, book a call to learn more.

Remember: Your income and impact as a business coach depend on how well you align incentives. Book that call, go make waves, and become the legend in your local business community.

Progress equals happiness. Start building a profit machine today.
