The Power of the “Little Red Arrow” Strategy for Business Coaches

Stop Feeling Lost, Start Coaching with Precision

Ever had a client say, “I just feel lost”? Or maybe you’ve muttered those words to yourself as you stare at the endless tabs open on your laptop, wondering where to even begin. You’re not alone. In fact, I’d wager that every successful coach has faced this head-on. There’s a reason for it, and there’s a damn good solution. I call it the “Little Red Arrow” strategy.

Let’s break it down, business coach style, with stories, actionable steps, and a few of my favorite coaching frames.

What Is the “Little Red Arrow” Strategy?

If you jump into an Uber in Los Angeles and ask the driver to take you to New York City, what’s the first thing they need to know? Not the route. Not the playlist. Not how much you tip. They need to know where you’re starting, and where you want to go.

That’s the trick. Getting clarity on those two coordinates. Most people, coaches included, overlook one or both.

The little red arrow is you. Right here, right now.

It’s the honest answer to “Where am I?” and “Where do I want to end up?” It eliminates confusion, kills overwhelm, and gives you, or your client, a plan they can stick to and adapt.

Why Most Coaches (and Clients) Feel Lost

Feeling lost isn’t a productivity problem. It’s a clarity problem. As I mentioned on the podcast, “By definition, you do not know where you are, and you do not know where you’re going.”

Here’s where things unravel:

  • You haven’t honestly defined your starting point.
  • The destination is vague, “someday” stuff.
  • Too many priorities, too many “red Ferraris” speeding by on Facebook.
  • The dreaded comparison trap, chasing someone else’s idea of success.

You know what happens when both coordinates are fuzzy? Paralysis. Distraction. That feeling of “I’m busy but getting nowhere.”

When You Nail Down the Little Red Arrow

Suddenly, the clouds part. Your action steps are clear, and you stop getting yanked into other people’s glamorous but irrelevant directions.

I’ve seen it. I’ve coached it. I’ve lived it.

Example #1: The Live Event Coach

Let’s say your 12-month plan (your “destination”) is hosting a live business event every week. Instead of hemming and hawing and getting bogged down, here’s what an honest little red arrow approach looks like:

  • Assess your starting point.
How many people are in your network? What venues could you actually book? Where are you financially?
  • Be brutally honest.
Maybe you have zero list and no clue where to start. Fine, at least you know it. That’s your red arrow.
  • Define vivid, bite-sized steps.
List venues, set parking plans, start the outreach, create an email script, write your ringless voicemail.
Don’t get swept up by someone else’s flashy social proof. Just get ten real business owners, every week, in the damn room.

This is not feel-good motivational fluff. It’s actionable, measurable, and relentlessly tied to reality.

Key Problems, and How to Solve Them

1. Ego and Self-Deception

Most people fudge the “here” because it stings. Maybe they’re not as far along as they hoped, maybe the cash flow looks ugly. This is where coaches earn their stripes. Your job is to help clients look at the truth without flinching.

2. Destination Drift

Some clients can tell you they’re in LA, but their idea of “New York” changes hourly: “I want more free time,” “I want $100k months,” “I want to launch a software company,” all in 24 hours. The red arrow works only when the destination is clear and consistent.

3. “Red Ferrari” Distractions

Watch out for the trend-chasing, the Bitcoin coach who vanishes, the influencer with the rented jet. Help clients see through the noise. Redirect them back to their map, not someone else’s photoshopped highlights.

Stop the Guessing, Start the Progress

Here’s what I want every coach reading this to do, while it’s fresh and you don’t have 25 browser tabs open:

1. Set the “Little Red Arrow” With Every Client

  • Ask: Where are you really starting from? (Revenue, time, team, leads, mindset.)
  • Get specifics, no vague answers. “I’m at $4,800/mo with 3 clients, all referrals, no automation.”

2. Co-Create the Destination

  • Pick one solid goal. Not three. Not seventeen. “I want to have 10 active coaching clients at $2,000/mo.”
  • What does success look like, taste like, pay like, feel like?

3. Map the Road

  • Break the journey down week by week, month by month.
  • Review progress religiously. Like I said: “Pick a clearly defined destination. Picture a dartboard. You gotta create your bullseye.”

4. Course Correct with Brutal Honesty

  • Remember what pilots do: constantly adjust the route, don’t pretend you’re perfectly on track.
  • Celebrate the wins, learn from the off-road moments.

5. Don’t Default to “Either/Or”, Find Option Three

Should I sell my practice or keep going? Stop! Maybe the real answer is franchising. Or finding a JV partner. Or becoming a shareholder and shifting to consulting.

The money, the freedom, the answers, they’re almost always hiding in the “option three.”

Adapt or Stay Stuck

Look, the phrase “I’m lost” is universal for a reason. It shows up for everyone. But the ones who get out of the woods fastest, and build legendary coaching businesses, are the ones who ruthlessly define their starting point and destination.

Remember: Wealthy people have plans, not wish lists. And plans start with a little honesty and a big red arrow.

Ready to Install an Operating System for Profit?

If you’re committed to helping small business owners set clear destinations and crush their numbers, you need a system that makes it simple, repeatable, and scalable. I created an operating system ANY coach can install in ANY small business to grow profits, often by six figures or more.

Book a call. Let’s get to work.

If this post made sense, or even ruffled a few feathers, share it with another coach who’s tired of feeling lost. Progress equals happiness. Let’s move the arrow.
