‘Process For Your Core Competency’

Robbins etc… have a ‘core competency’ they concentrate on like we do with:
Once you establish your clients CORE COMPETANCY that needs to be isolated, improved, and continually worked on…
… the same way Southwest Airlines have perfected boarding and unboarding (is
that a word?) a plane and FedEx have perfected getting a parcel to you in less than
How do you document it for the policies and procedure manual?
Here’s a 9 step process for doing so:
Determine if it’s worthy of being the CORE competency and that it will provide a
competitive advantage in the marketplace (overnight delivery for Fedex)
Name it (Drive Thru for McDonalds)
Define the RESULT they’re looking to accomplish (Pizza delivered in 30 minutes or
less for Dominos)
Reverse engineer the process (planning and deplaning the plane for Southwestern
Airlines) and document into steps
Determine quality control for each step (Speed of boarding, unboarding, time to
deliver pizza, possibility of getting a package delivered overnight)
Determine cost control for each step (How much does it cost to get a parcel there on
time, pizza in 30, a plane cleaned and then boarded)
Ensure accurate reporting for consistency of deliverable (create a scoreboard)
Ensure accurate reporting so process can be optimized (can 30 minute delivery
become 20 minutes and can overnight delivery become 12 hours at some stage and
what are the incremental costs VS benefits of doing so)
Be willing to take a step backwards to take multiple steps forward.
