One Thing: Day 481: Bill Gates

Day 481: Bill Gates

Yesterday I was explaining how looking at expenses isn’t very sexy…. Unless you really like covering your annual high-end coaching fees instantly and making lotsa money.

Speaking of being sexy…

My wife is writing a book about all the things I should be doing in my life…

She’s calling it an oughtobiography.

Ba dum dum tss…

In other news…

Just because someone carries it well… doesn’t mean it isn’t heavy.

Anyhoo…

Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:

‘Advice from Bill Gates’

The other day I got a ton of positive feedback in regards to the Anthony Hopkins’ advice I captured.

Some great advice about letting people go and being OK with it.

Today I’m going to give you some advice from a guy you may or may not like, Bill Gates… I encourage you to put your positive/negative emotion aside and accept that you don’t build a company like Microsoft on the back of luck or hope.

Question: “Bill, you’re known for clearing time on your calendar for ‘Think Weeks’ where you hole up in a cabin, read books, and ponder the world. Why is this so essential?”

Bill Gates (given recent revelations… insert painfully obvious joke on whether he included female staff rather than books in some of those trips):

“Adult life is so easy to fill up with activities.

The ability to step back and read deeply or think deeply or write up thoughts is largely missing.

And so I work hard on my schedule to make sure I’m not filling it up with too many things. It’s been a little bit easier with no travel this year.

So I think of myself as a student where I need almost like a reading period to consolidate my knowledge.

It was particularly challenging when I was CEO of Microsoft. Eventually, I got to two weeks a year that I was setting aside.

Since I retired from Microsoft in 2008, I don’t have to do it necessarily as one block, a week at a time, but I do set aside lots of days, and then I say,

‘Did I write the memo that I intended to write?’

The act of writing – when you try to explain to someone else – is where you really are forced to think things through and not be sloppy in your thinking.”

My 5 takeaways from this sage Bill Gates advice are:

  1. Write down what you learn (I often learn something new and turn those notes into an email. Helps me cement my learnings).
  2. Be thoughtful and strategic with your calendar.
  3. Don’t stop ‘learning’ in High School / College… if your goal is Mastery then it’s a life long, one day at a time, endeavor. Said otherwise: ‘Don’t practice to practice… practice to improve.’
  4. Schedule TTT time (Time to Think / Time to Measure) on your calendar… It’ll be the MOST PROFITABLE thing you’ll ever do.
  5. When doing your scheduled reading/learning think to yourself these 3 questions consistently: 1) How can I use this? 2) Why must I use this? 3) When will I use this?

Read number 4 again…

I bet you won’t do it.

You heard it here first.

Now, pick up the phone and go help someone.
