Day 431: A Butterfly’s Wings
Yesterday I was explaining how ‘you guys’ and ‘everyone’ doesn’t really exist… you and your clients need to learn how to use the magical little word YOU.
Speaking of mistakes…
I saw an old hockey buddy on the weekend and he looked a little odd….
Me: “How long have you been wearing that bra..?”
Him: “Ever since my wife found it in the glove compartment.”

You’ve been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked.
For a change of pace…
Try approving of yourself for 30 days and see what happens.

Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:
‘Butterfly Wings’
When I was 16, my big brother committed suicide over a business failure…
… then my dear Mother drank herself to death (a non-drinker), right in front of me as self-imposed punishment while I dealt with puberty, hockey, girls, homework, driving, friends and possibly experimenting with sex/drinking/drugs depending upon who’s reading.
If I’m honest, they were ridiculously hard, difficult, and confusing times.
I used to clean the house late at night hoping she’d wake up in the morning…
See some ‘order’ in the house and snap out of it.
No such luck.
Gets me teary-eyed when I think about it.
I remember learning in high school that when a butterfly is struggling to get out of the cocoon and you cut the cocoon to help it out…
The butterfly dies.
You have to let the butterfly struggle… the struggle forces blood into the wings and builds strength so they can spread their wings and fly.
The same goes for you.
The same goes for your clients.
The same goes for your kids.
The same goes for your spouse.
The struggles are necessary to make us strong enough to soar higher than we’ve previously been.
More often than not, the ‘most successful people’ you know…
Had a long and brutal struggle that you know nothing about.
Moral of the story.
Run to the struggle rather than run away from it.
Stop bailing your kids out of everything.
That’s where all the growth is.
When I went through some tough times in 2008… I called one of my best friend’s Dad and asked him to mentor me.
He’d be worth $250 million on a really bad day.
Almost the first words out of his mouth:
“I’m not going to lend money… so please don’t ask. Now, let’s continue.”
Blood instantly rushed to my wings :o)
