Day 397: The Person Not The Problem

Yesterday I explained the one word that rules your world… and it wasn’t fear like most would guess.

Pro Coaching / Sales Tip:

“Give me an example of a company or person in your industry that you’re envious of…”

Follow that with:

“Why are you envious of them..?”

Then, in your close… paint a mental picture, that working with you, over the next 12 months, will result in them being/having what they described they’re envious of.

Speaking of people being insanely non-committal…

Given Demi Lovato’s recent news, I was going to tell a non-binary joke.

But it could go either way.

‘Coach the Person Not the Problem’

This likely appears obvious… but hear me out.

Yesterday I got an INSANE amount of feedback from people that didn’t realize I’ve sold $10,000,000 (that’s $10 million dollars) of coaching in the last 12 months.

Not bad for a short ex-hockey player with poor math skills, bad jokes, and very little personality.

Your prospects (local business owners) are aware they have a problem.

They might prefer to think of it as ‘a gap.’

But they ONLY have a baseline level of self-awareness.

Just enough of that to lead them to the EASIEST piece of a complicated puzzle.


Think of the guy/gal that buys the book…

That book often never gets, as much as, opened.

Just like the ding dong that buys your coaching but doesn’t do anything.

Blames you.

They buy, thinking they’ve achieved something, and then don’t do anything.


The FIRST order of business needs to be to help them THINK at a deeper level.

Past the surface.

Ask “WHY” multiple levels deep.

Helping your client develop more ‘emotional intelligence’ if one of the most valuable things you can do for them to move from BUY and into ACTION mode.

If you don’t… expect a cancellation email within 90 days.

You want the secret sauce (solution)?

Get your client to go to previous decisions they’ve made…

Help them think through the second, third, fourth order consequences of those decisions.

If they had made a DIFFERENT decision previously… how would those consequences have changed?

Positively and negatively.


In specific type of situations, when I get pissed off and express it to someone else…

It costs me money.

Every, bloody time.

Guess what…?

Thanks to experience… I can feel these situations approaching and I put the hand brake on.

*Otherwise known as STOP BLOODY TALKING and go for a walk*

I minimize the damage cause my self-awareness says:

“This is about to get expensive.”


Help them grasp the pain of NOT DOING specific actions…

The cost of inaction.

When they avoided the phone call

When they avoided the tough conversation

When they avoided the email

When they avoided the gym

When they avoided the bills

When they avoided the leaky faucet

When they avoided the training program

When YOU avoided my software?!?!

*Julia Roberts Pretty Woman Voice* “You people work on commission right… Big Mistake. Big. HUGE.”

Avoidance seldom makes things better… usually makes them far worse.

You heard it here first.
