Day 375: Lebron. Kaepernick. Menendez Brothers.

So yesterday I made a little error… but that’s nothing new.

My bad and we all learn.

I’m 5’9” when I stand on a phone book which means my dating profile would read 5’9” but when I rolled up for our date, you’d see that 5’7” is a stretch.

To make myself feel better for yesterday’s indiscretion… I’m going to pull a few KB jokes Rodedog has delivered at my expense during the podcast.

Joke 1:

KB, you’re so short you call Lil Wayne, Wayne.

Joke 2:

What does KB call miniature golf?

Golf.

Joke 3:

KB You’re nose looks like you took 12 years of elbows to the face playing hockey.

 And you’ve got a body like a poorly shaped pear.

Can we be even now..?

Please.

Anyhoo…

Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:

“Ownership”

The abuse I got yesterday easily broke records and trust me I’ve had some bad days with some accidental indiscretions.

I put myself out there and that ain’t gonna change regardless of yesterday’s death threats.

*Sadly, not joking*

It got me thinking…

Why are people SO pissed at me?

Let me explain it this way…

True and real branding involves a transfer of ownership.

When a brand expresses itself poorly it feels like a reflection of you, the loyal fan…

Think of the Nike and Colin Kaepernick saga.

Or when Lebron James chose to take his talents to South Beach and the Miami Heat.

Similarly, my readers feel ownership over what I’m doing and strangely that’s about the highest praise you can accomplish when running a business or building a following.

It also comes with some responsibility.

When people speak of their possessions they say it with ‘my’ in front.

My team

My bat

My bike

My boat

My skis

My gun

My city

My hometown

My country

MY MAGAZINE

A question to help you and your high-end coaching clients:

“How do we get our prospects and clients to think of our brand as their own.”

One of the ways they do it is by naming their fans:

Funnel Hackers (Brunson)

Deadheads (Grateful Dead)

Little Monsters (Lady Gaga)

Trekkies (Star Trek)

“A Yankee Fan” (insert any pro team in place of Yankee)

Etc…

It’s no different than a child and their favorite blanket or teddy bear.

Similarly, when you lose your iPhone they say it can feel like a death in the family.

The people that identify as a TRUE FAN feel ownership over the celebrity/team / brand.

We buy specific brands, follow teams/bands, and cheer for people for two reasons:

Satisfy Desires (be accepted, look younger, look fit etc…)

Express Ourselves (Team, band, sport, product etc…)

The people that follow you, that buy from you and that relate to you…

Help you: EXPRESS YOURSELF.

When you buy a car, baseball bat, house, phone, gun, instrument, bike, shoes etc…

You’re really expressing yourself.

Women express themselves, on average, more than men…

Hence why they shop more.
