Day 309: A VERY Special Woman
I’d dearly appreciate a prayer, for strength, for my best friends Mom, my second Mom, Sherry Grant.
AKA “Momma” and “Granmomma”.
She’s taken a turn for the worse and I’m at the airport as I write this.
And no, it’s not virus related so please don’t ask.
Part of me feels so blessed that I can drop everything and jump on a flight in a matter of hours to be there for her. The other part of me is torn apart for the road ahead and it’s literally hard to breath right now.
I like to be a smart arse and you send funny stuff…
But today I’d appreciate thoughts and prayers of strength towards a VERY special woman.
When I was 16 and my big brother committed suicide and my family fell apart… she took me in like a son when I needed someone to step in.
She’s never stopped ‘stepping in’.
I would never be where I am today without her and her family practically adopting me.
Thank you, my beautiful Momma.
Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:
Momma has always told me that my strength was empowering other people.
You’ve been sold a MYTH that there is only one way to lead.
Michael Jordan was a ruthless competitor and others were inspired and fought with him.
Kobe Bryant was stern and in your face.
Magic Johnson was more smiles than stern looks.
Phil Jackson was a player’s coach… so much so he let Dennis Rodman leave for Vegas midseason.
Oprah was overweight.
Tim Cook is gay.
Warren Buffett is like Grandpa.
Steve Ballmer was a beloved leader but known to angrily smash glass in meetings.
The only thing consistent amongst the icons listed is that they WIN.
You’ll see people telling you (selling you) they have ‘the right way’ to lead for now and for the future…
That’s simply the mental model of ‘recency bias’.
Bottom line… despite what they tell you there’s NOT one way to lead.
The way to lead is to be congruent with YOU.
Society would prefer soft and gentle leaders… but history shows the ruthless types succeed just as often, if not more.
Leadership is not about transforming… it’s about congruence and consistency.
So if you’re looking to become the best you can be…
It doesn’t matter if you’re Bobby Knight and ready to choke a player on camera, soft like Warren Buffett, overweight like Oprah or gay like Tim Cook…
The trick to leadership is to be YOU.
Different situations also call for different styles.
I lead my kids differently than I lead my team at work.
I lead a kids’ hockey team differently than I do a team of business coaches.
Leadership is about being a chameleon.
The critical factor is to be YOU.
