‘The Netflix Effect..?’
Last week the advice I gave you from Netflix was obviously helpful so I figured I’d add a ‘story’ component from yesterday’s 4 step branding email.
The Queen’s Gambit is arguably Netflix’s biggest success since the whacky, Tiger King.
Close to 70 million households have watched it.
It created an explosion of interest in chess and all things related to it.
Damn, even I thought about playing chess after watching it.
The message here…
To call this ‘The Netflix Effect’ is horrifically incorrect.
This isn’t the first time ‘media’ has driven people to buy and act irrationally and will not be the last.
Risky Business turned Ray-Ban Wayfarers into the number one selling sunglasses of all time.
Top Gun increased applications 100X for the Air Force and aviator sunglasses couldn’t be kept in stock.
Fight Club created real-life fight clubs.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Jeff Spicoli took Vans from a company no one had heard of to what is a $3 billion-dollar brand today.
Yes, you read the $3 billion right.
Here’s My Point…
It’s not “The Netflix Effect…”
It’s the “Storytelling Effect.”
The newfound interest in chess has everything to do with:
- An inspirational story
- An amazing lead character
- CONFLICT (every story needs conflict)
- A sport that includes intelligence, grace, and sophistication
Where am I going with all of this?
You and your high-end coaching company probably have all of these:
