Day 300: Context Over Control

Yesterday I was explaining how I’ve been doing research on Tony Hsieh for an article to go in this edition of my magazine.

He was an incredibly giving man that succumbed to addiction and his passing is a monumental tragedy for the business communities that he championed for.

Of which, there were many.

Speaking of champions…

Tony Hsieh first started drugs when he was 18.

I started with a joint, then a bong or two.

Before he knew it, he was using amphetamines and then moved to ecstasy for a stronger buzz.

Not long after he started using hard stuff like cocaine.

He was a complete mess.

He was broke and his body was ruined.

But HOLY SHIT what a night!

‘Lead with Context Over Control’

I realized yesterday there was a key takeaway from the book No Rules Rules: Reed Hastings about Netflix’s Culture that I didn’t highlight clearly.

Reed Hastings has almost no “policies” on stuff like company expenses, travel, and vacation time.

But he doesn’t just tell his staff to make decisions and wish them luck.

He provides his employees with the ‘context’ to make decisions, on behalf of the company, that will align with Netflix’s long term goals.

An excellent example from the book is when Adam Del Deo, the head of documentary programming, was bidding a huge sum of money for the streaming rights to a new film.

Management didn’t tell him yes or no…. they provided him ‘context’.

They discussed the companies long-term objectives and asked him to decide if he thought the film would be successful enough to merit the enormous cost.

Ultimately relying on Adam’s expertise and experience on whether or not to go forward.

The film was ‘Icarus’ and it broke ground for Netflix and won an Oscar for “Best Documentary” in 2018.

Leading with ‘context over control’.

Totally different than the way the average business operates.
