Day 276: Why I Do What I Do

Yesterday I gave you what you didn’t ask for and also explained how my wife and I had to help my daughter come up with a different name for the dog.

Speaking of my wife…

I went to my Pastor and I remember asking him:

“Father, all day I hear a voice ordering me around and telling me what I have to do. Am I possessed by the devil?”

He replied:

“No son, you’re just married.”

Anyhoo…

Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:

‘Why I Do, What I Do?’

I get this question almost daily.

I’m the poster child for an entrepreneurial family gone sideways.

My big brother committed suicide when I was 16 years old over a business failing and then my beautiful Mom drank herself to death, as self-imposed punishment, right in front of me.

As I type, she sits on my desk in a pink urn… I give her a kiss multiple times per day.

Possibly too much info but I only wear lipstick when I’m alone, in the closet while wearing a dress and high heels, so no one would ever know.

My dad has always been, and is still, my mentor but he always says that I get my spirit and drive from my Mom.

Marriages break up from lack of money 100x more than they do from ‘lack of love’.

Separations, divorce, depression, anxiety attacks, suicides… all rampant in entrepreneurial families.

Entrepreneurial kids like me get to meet step-Mommy and step-Daddy… people they have zero interested in meeting.

As business coaches, we don’t just help businesses….

We save marriages, we keep kids off drugs, we save lives.

When you think about making that call or sending that private message to a business owner…

Don’t do it for you, your bank account or ‘to get a client’.

Make the call and send those messages for their kids, for their mental well being, for their confidence, and for their family welfare.

You have seen this before but I’ll post it here.

It might have more meaning now that you know me a little better through my emails.

Even more, meaning now that you know I wear lipstick in the closet.

Here It Is:

There’s an insane number of “guru’s” in our space that talk a good game and deliver nothing for coaches.

That creates distrust and trepidation in our industry.

Business Coaches don’t know who to trust to help them both professionally and financially. I believe that’s one reason so many have “shiny object syndrome” where they jump from one business growth program to the next.

Not knowing what works and what doesn’t. In my opinion, it’s rampant and only going to get worse.

My big brother was a world-class skier and he committed suicide when I was 16 years old over a business failing.

I lived with my Dad at the time and moved in with my Mom to try to help her get through it and also to sleep in my big brother’s bed and smell his pillows.

To say my Mom was “all over the place” after his death is a bit of an understatement.

Understandable.

I would often clean up the house after Mom hit the sheets. Partly I was trying to help out but mostly the mess unsettled me.

My parents had recently gotten divorced, my family was a disaster, I was 16 years old, need I say more, basically, the messiness made me crazy.

On a subconscious level, I guess I figured a tidy home would create some order in my life.

Sadly, my Mom ended up drinking herself to death which was TOUGH to watch as a young man still dealing with puberty, etc…  but I fought hard to create some order.

I moved to Australia when I was 20 to get as far away from the craziness as humanly possible.

In the end, it all worked out.

I have an amazing young family and a business/career of helping business coaches that I’m insanely passionate about and most would chop off their left leg for.

My Dad tells me:

“Congratulations Kid, You Made Chicken Salad Out Of Chicken Sh*t” LOL!

Bottom line, the messiness of the business coaching industry is something that unsettles me.

My commitment is to create a “tidy home” for you and your fellow business coaches.

World-class is my MINIMUM standard and it’ll stay that way for your magazine as long as I’m alive and kicking.
