Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:

“Barter”

In the words of my Father… ‘If you can’t get a full meal grab a sandwich.’

There are some hard times ahead for many business owners and the ones able to think outside the box will be the ones that survive and ultimately thrive.

A seldom-used but incredibly powerful technique is bartering…. And barter tends to flourish during tough economic times when cash is low.

When I started an advertising company in my late teens, I used to trade ads for pasta (yes, as in dinner LOL), car repairs and one of my favorites was an exchange for a futon bed.

I didn’t even know what I was doing but apparently I was into bartering before it was really a thing.

This technique can increase your purchasing power dramatically… here are some tricks I’ve learned over the years when setting up barter deals: 

  • Don’t create time limits… part of the appeal is they can get to it when they can get to it (like gift cards… that’s often, never).
  • Go to your ideal clients and offer a direct trade of goods and services. Always offer retail value and not “at cost” value. Example: as a business coach you can receive digital marketing services in exchange for your high-end coaching services.
  • Like sports trading… be open to a ‘three-way’ (get your mind out of the gutter, weirdo!) where third-party goods and services can be involved.  Example: a business coach, accountant, and a digital marketer do a three-way swap.
  • The creativity will impress your prospects even if the deal doesn’t come together.
  • The tax savings here will blow your mind.

Barter Management

New apps and software allow for much easier barter management. These technologies have opened the door for a thriving barter marketplace.

Encourage your clients to do the same to increase sales and value to their clients.
